Chesser Decoys
Fine Decoys and Eastern Shore Hunting
Since 1973
Guides
Fishing guide services for Holden Creek Rod & Gun Club are provided by Captains Grayson Chesser and P.G. Ross. Details on Capt. Chesser's background as guide, decoy carver, historian and teller of fine tales can be found throughout
the hunting and decoy sections of the Holden Creek Rod & Gun Club website.
Capt. Ross is USCG Licensed to carry up to 6 passengers up to 100 miles offshore. He grew up on Pungoteague Creek on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and has been fowling and fishing the surrounding environs for over 25 years - the same areas frequented by his ancestors since the late 1600's. He counts himself lucky to have grown up in a family with a rich outdoor tradition. Thanks to his grandfather's and father's willingness to introduce him to fishing, he was lucky enough to catch his first VA Saltwater Fishing Tournament
Citation - for a 4 pound speckled trout - at the age of 5 within sight of the duck blinds he still hunts today.
While not guiding waterfowl hunts and fishing trips with Holden Creek Gun Club, Capt. Ross actually has a "day job" as a marine biologist
for the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. This background has led to substantial understanding of the natural history of the marine environment
of the Chesapeake Bay and Seaside coastal bays and barrier islands. In lulls between fish bites, he can be enticed to discuss such topics as oyster
and eelgrass restoration, shark biology or how to tell the difference between a silverside and a bay anchovy!
